On 13 May 2017 the Riga City Council City Development Department and the Local Government of the Carnikava Municipality invited people, within the framework of project LIFE CoHaBit, to joint spring time work in the territory of Nature Park “Piejūra” (Vakarbulli).
Among the people who came were representatives of all of the project partners – employees of the Riga City Council City Development Department; employees of the Riga City Council Housing and Environment Department; representatives of the Local Government of the Carnikava Municipality; as well as representatives of Nature Conservation Agency Pierīga Regional Administration and the Association “Baltic Coasts”. The owner of a part of the meadow territory and a few random interested people also joined the work.
The joint work took place in a meadow, on the coasts of river Bullupe, which, until now, lacked proper management which resulted in that the vegetation characteristic to this habitat (the Baltic boreal coastal meadow) has become endangered. The habitat restoration works were carried out under the guidance of Brigita Laime, a biotope expert of the Association “Baltic Coasts”, She introduced the participants to the issues of protection, preservation and restoration of biotopes, as well as the plants characteristic to this specific biotope, drawing special attention to the currently blooming seaside thrift (Armeria maritima) which is found only in the meadows on the coasts of rivers Bullupe and Lielupe.
The aim of project LIFE CoHaBit is to reduce the effect of anthropogenic load, to restore the valuable coastal habitants and to promote sustainable management in Nature Park „Piejūra”.
